Don't Trust the Contractor
It's important to understand that contractors are not highly skilled when it comes to the installation of deadbolts. After all, it's not their specialty. It's best to get an expert to have a look at all your perimeter doors. This will pull up any existing problems, and you may be able to get your deadbolts reinstalled. For example, the best set of deadbolts you can get have at least a 3cm "throw," which is the length of the bolt that fits into the door frame. They should also be fitted with a striker plate which has high tensile screws that can go at least 9cms into the frame.
When Deadbolts Won't Help You
Have a look at your main points of entry. Many homes have decorative windows on either side of the door. A conventional deadbolt is not likely to do you any good in this case. If somebody is intent on getting into the home, they're going to knock the glass out, reach in and turn. Replace conventional deadbolts with double sided alternatives that need a key in order to open from the inside as well.
Where's the Master Key?
It's a good idea to have all your locks rekeyed whenever you move into a new house. Somebody does have a master key somewhere, and you never know when it could fall into the wrong hands.
Don't Allow Duplicates
To be completely safe you should ask the locksmith to provide you with details about high security locks. These cannot be duplicated at a hardware store, so only the keys that come with a new lock can be used.
Don't Buy Mass-produced
Many people cut corners when fitting locks to their home, but you shouldn't. The type of lock that you are able to buy in a typical big box store is likely to be mass-produced. Although it may well be made by a reputable manufacturer, it's probably not to the highest specification.
