People send flowers to commemorate important occasions throughout the year. Through the generations our society has evolved to attach specific meanings to individual flowers. It pays to have an understanding of these meanings, to know what a specific floral gift actually "means." If you don't, you could end up sending the "wrong" subliminal message to someone. Not everyone is aware that there may be a meaning attached to a gift they receive, or indeed a tribute they intend to send. However, when you have a clear understanding, it attaches significance to the gesture. What flowers should you choose in order to send a specific message to somebody important, and why should you be careful?

The Special Meaning Attached to Six Flower Species

If you are looking forward to a momentous occasion in the future, send a Bird of Paradise to the other person. This indicates anticipation, joyfulness and excitement and is perfect to commemorate the news that someone has recently found out they are expecting a child, for example.

Did you know that different types of Chrysanthemum can be used for different reasons? For example, a white flower indicates loyalty, trust and love, while a yellow version is used to indicate slighted love, so be careful with your choice of colour before you send!

Springtime normally brings the cheerful, yellow Daffodil to our gardens. Here, you should be careful how many individual flowers you send. It is said that a single daffodil is an indication of a misfortune about to unfold. However, when you send a bunch of daffodils, this indicates a happy and joyous occasion.

You had better not be colourblind if you are choosing a Hyacinth to send. While some people believe that this flower indicates "playfulness", in general the different coloured varieties have different meanings. For example, purple could indicate sorrow, blue means consistency, red implies playfulness, yellow warns of jealousy and white confirms love. Take your pick according to what's going on!

Another flower that carries special spectral relevance is the Iris. The blue Iris indicates hope and faith, the purple version imparts your compliments to the recipient, the white indicates purity, and the yellow symbolises passion.

Even the Lily can confuse you if not careful. There are a variety of different species and colours here, but the most popular lily-of-the-valley generally sends a message that you are pure at heart and sweet.
